Day 16, Humane Society

Angie can be found blogging at Baby Cheapskate, where she shares deals and coupon codes on all things kids and baby and hosts a social network of “Cheep Peeps” for parents looking for even more.

picture-10A few years ago I witnessed a pretty horrible act of animal brutality. I lived in a “transitional” (i.e. slightly sketchy) part of town and was horrified to see one day my neighbor beating his dog with a baseball bat until it was unconscious. A baseball bat. Not knowing what to do, but unwilling and unable to do nothing, I ran out of the house and placed myself between the bat and the dog. Pretty foolish of me, I know, but the attacked stopped and the dog survived. The experience shook me. I still feel a rush of adrenaline every time I think of it.

Knowing that there’s an organization that helps animals in this kind of situation makes me feel a lot better. The Humane Society of the United States is the world’s largest animal protection organization. HSUS celebrates animals, rescuing animals both small and large, domesticated and wild, who are in danger of repeated cruelty at the hands of individuals or institutions, in danger due to natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, and more.

More specifically, HSUS, in its own words, “The HSUS protects all animals through legislation, litigation, investigation, education, advocacy and field work. …Additionally, The HSUS operates its own network of sanctuaries, providing care and homes to more animals than any other national animal protection organization in the United States.”

Your dollar can do a lot to prevent animal cruelty.

(Yes, the poll offers you the choice between “Yes.” and “Yes.” because I didn’t think we really needed to count the “No” answers, and the poll required two choices! Hey, it’s not a perfect system, but it’ll work!)

  1. I am so definitely in on this!
Anyone who has ever had a pet knows that their loyalty to their owner is a lesson we humans could give to each other.

  2. That is a terribly awful situation that you witnessed. I’m glad that you were able to protect the dog from it’s abusive owner. In addition to your efforts in helping the Human society, there is an organization called Everywun that donates money to non-profit organizations–such as the Humane Society, among many others– for every badge that is created, viewed, and clicked on. You should check it out!
