Day 10, Project Linus

Jason is the creator of FrugalDad.com, a blog created to help families find financial resources that draw on a conservative approach to personal finance.

Three years ago my wife’s grandmother passed away after losing her battle with cancer. Our kids, six and three at the time, were very close to their great-grandmother and were saddened by her loss. Within a couple days both of my kids were presented a handmade blanket made by volunteers at our local chapter of Project Linus, and I was eager to learn more about the organization.

Project Linus is made up of thousands of volunteers throughout the United States. Their primary mission is “to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer blanketeers.” Through their service, volunteers are also able to “provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.”

Since inception, Project Linus has delivered over 2.6 million blankets to children in shelters, hospitals, social agencies, or anywhere else children are in need of a warm hug.

Your contributions to Project Linus will help provide funding for things such as fabric, batting, yarn, other blanket making supplies, and blanket labels, as well as provide support for various administrative expenses.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share one of my favorite charities with you, and I hope you’ll consider donating today.

(Yes, the poll offers you the choice between “Yes.” and “Yes.” because I didn’t think we really needed to count the “No” answers, and the poll required two choices! Hey, it’s not a perfect system, but it’ll work!)

  1. Hmm. When my youngest was born, he had to stay in the hospital a little while because he was premature. During his stay, they had given him a blanket. They said they were made and given my volunteers and I now wonder if it was this program? Nothing specific was ever mentioned, but I now wonder. Anyway, it is my favorite blanket of his♥ I’ll have to find out if it was the same group or just a bunch of locals doing a good deed. Either way, very sweet for people to do. It’s certainly appreciated.

  2. It probably was a local Project Linus chapter as they often provide blankets to hospitals for newborns and children who are ill. I think it is a great cause, and one that I am happy to support!

  3. what a great charity! :)

  4. I was out of town and am just getting caught up on blogs. I said I’d come back…. and I donated to about half of the charities so far. This is such a great idea!

  5. Love the concept behind this charity. I donated. Good pick Frugal Dad.
